Anton Stralman – 30-Second 3rd Degree
The 6’1” Swedish defenseman was originally drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 7th round of the 2005 NHL draft. After playing in the Swedish Elite league for a couple seasons he made his NHL debut on October 6, 2007 and scored his first NHL goal on March 28th. He had several short stints with the Calgary Flames, Columbus Blue Jackets and New Jersey Devils, before finding a home with the New York Rangers and has been a top 6 defender for them ever since.
GRADING HIS PLAY SO FAR:
I’m happy with my season so far. I’ve been working hard the past couple years to do my defensive part and I think that has shown here in the first 20 games or so. I’m still working towards being a little more offensive and helping the team out that way.
PLAYING FOR ALAIN VIGNEAULT AS OPPOSED TO JOHN TORTORELLA:
It’s definitely a little change system-wise and the small details all over the ice. We are playing some interesting hockey. I think we like to have a quick transition game, playing fast, north south, so I like the way we are playing, it’s a fun game.
THOUGHTS ON HYBRID ICING:
I like it. I think its good, obviously coming from Europe with no touch icing. I didn’t mind the touch icing either, but I think this way is a little safer. You know some calls might be debatable sometime because of it, but I think all and all it’s a good thing for hockey.
MOST MEMORABLE CAREER MOMENT:
That’s a hard one. My first game was one. Winning the bronze metal in the world championship. That was maybe not that biggest of a titles, but coming off of loosing two bronze matches and winning the third it was very nice. Back in the Swedish amateur leagues, we got promoted one year and that was probably my first real highlight and it was pretty awesome.
IDOL GROWING UP:
The biggest ones were Brian Leetch and Al Maclnnis. Along with all the Swedish players, Mats Sundin, Peter Forsberg, all those guys. I really looked up to them, maybe Mats Sundin in particular. Out of all defensemen it was those two guys though.
FAVORITE OFF ICE ACTIVITY:
I like soccer. I enjoy watching that sport, playing that sport. I played it for along time. Its probably one my biggest interests along with music and movies. Most other times I spend with my kids and family.
